Prof. Dr. Jan Kelch
Gemäldegalerie Berlin

Biography:
He studied in Berlin and Munich and holds a doctorate in art history from the Berlin Free University. He spent some years in the Netherlands and began his career as assistant professor at the Free University Berlin, then became Curator, later Senior Curator for Flemish and Dutch painting at the Berlin
Gemäldegalerie, but remained teaching part time at the University. Prior to joining the Gemäldegalerie he served two terms as Visiting Lecturer at Berkeley University, California. Jan Kelch is director of the Gemäldegalerie since 1996. He is a trustee of the Emperor-Friedrich-Museums-Society, the Streit-Foundation in Berlin and the Foundation of Saint Matthew in Berlin.

He is the author of many articles and catalogues on Flemish and Dutch 17th century painting. He contributed in his field of specialization to maior exhibitions: Peter Paul Rubens, Berlin, 1978, Dutch Painting from Berlin; Private Collections, Berlin, 1984, Masterpieces of Dutch Genre Painting,Philadelphia, Berlin, London, 1984; Painting in Focus: The Man with the Golden Helmet, Berlin 1986, Rembrandt, The Master and his Workshop, Berlin, Amsterdam,London, 1991/92, Dutch Marine Painting, Rotterdam, Berlin, 1996/97.
