Prof. Dr. John Michael Krois

Biography:
Born in 1943 in Cincinnati (USA). He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts at Ohio University. Thereafter he studied at the University of Salzburg and Freie Universität Berlin before receiving his doctorate in philosophy at the Pennsylvania State University in 1975. He completed his habilitation in philosophy in 1988 at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. He held teaching positions at the Technische Universität in Braunschweig, Universität Trier, Emory University (Atlanta), and Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf. He has taught philosophy since 1994 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

His primary research interests include the history of philosophy and the theory of culture, particularly the theory of symbolic forms. He has published widely on the philosopher Ernst Cassirer. He was coeditor in 1998 of: Edgar Wind - Kunsthistoriker und Philosoph (Berlin: Akademie Verlag, 1998). He is one of the general editors of the unpublished papers of
Ernst Cassirer, Nachgelassene Manuskripte und Texte (Hamburg: Felix Meiner Verlag, 1995ff.) He was Guest of the Rector at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (1992), British Academy Visiting Fellow at the Warburg Insitute, London (1998), Yale University Beinecke Library Hermann Broch Fellow (1998). In 2000 he was named "Honorary Research Fellow" at the Centre for Intercultural Germanistics by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Glasgow.
