Biography:
Born 1929. Studies in Zurich and Kiel. Doctorale 1956 in Zurich. 1957–1967 scientific research assistant at the Swiss Institute for Research in International Economics at the University of St. Gallen; main topics of research: environmental and resource economics, monetary theory, European integration general economic theory. 1967 habilitation. From 1969 onwards professor of economics at the University of St. Gallen. 1981–1992 executive director of the Institute of Economics. October 1992 until March 1995 director of the Institute for Economy and the Environment (IWÖ). Professor emeritus since October 1994.

Prizes:
Nature Conservation Prize of the BUND (Friends of the Earth–Gemnan section); 1980 Binding-Prize (Liechtenstein) for conservation; 1986, honorary senator of the Vienna University of Economies and Business Administration; 1994, Dr. Brandenberger-Prize (Switzerland) ?????
